Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire is a county in the South of England, also known as “Cambs” or County Cambridge. Cambridgeshire, as it is known today, was formed in 1965 from the counties of Cambridgeshire and Ely and Huntingdon and Peterborough.

It is famed for its version of Silicon Valley, known as Silicon Fen which is a cluster of high-tech companies with interests in biotechnology, genetics, and software. Cambridgeshire is also the home of the world-renowned center of educational excellence, Cambridge University.

Towns in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire has many important towns including its county town, Cambridge, home of the University of Cambridge.

Cambridge

Cambridge is a university town and a seat of learning in Britain and many important figures in history have lived and studied there including John Major, once Prime Minister of Britain, world-famous scientist Steven Hawking, as well as musician Roger Waters and actor Baron Richard Attenborough.

Aside from the university, Cambridge has ample shopping, and a deep love of takeaway food, with its students, recorded as spending more than any other town on Chinese and Indian food. Cambridge is around two hours by train, and three hours by bus from London.

Wisbech

Wisbech is a town full of life and bustle, a civil parish with a population of around thirty-two thousand and is situated on the Fens of Cambridgeshire, a naturally marshy land in South-East England. Its people are sometimes named “Fen Tigers” because of the strong opposition is shown in opposing the draining of their beloved fenlands in the 17th century.

Situated three hours by train from London, Wisbech would later become a wealthy port town because of the fen drainage project, as evidenced by its modern-day bustling town center, full of great shops, cinemas, and theatres.

Huntingdon

Huntingdon has a very important place in British history, being the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and a regular haunt of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin who was executed in 1739. An important market town, it was chartered by King John in the 1205 and now boasts a wonderful collection of shops, salons, and boutiques.

Easily accessible from London via King’s Cross station, and only three hours away, Huntingdon is popular for its Historic Town Trail, which leads the walker past old jails, Norman stone-works, and even an old 19th Century mill.
