Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace has been instrumental in the history of Britain for several centuries. The Kensington Palace which is situated in London has been the home to many of the popular monarchs since the 17th century. Even today, it is the official residence of the members of the Royal Family.

The palace was bought by William and his wife Mary in 1689. William and Mary were popular as they were the only royal couple who have jointly reigned. When the royal couple had bought the palace, it was known as the Nottingham House. The name of the palace was soon changed to its current name.

Kensington Gardens

William and Mary intended to bring about certain changes in this Jacobean house and handed over the task of re-working the house to Sir Christopher Wren. Christopher made all the desired changes within a span of six months and William and his wife were the proud residents of this palace from 1689. The palace overlooks the ground pound in the Kensington gardens.

The Kensington palace underwent several expansions and structural changes as per the needs and requirements of the British monarchs residing in the palace. On such significant alteration to the Kensington Palace was done by Queen Anne by building the Orangery during her rule. Queen Victoria had spent her childhood in the Kensington Palace.

Other famous residents of the palace were Queen Anne, King George I, King George II, Princess Diana, and at present Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Palace was opened to the public for the very first time in 1898.

Kensington Palace also houses the dresses worn by the monarchs and these include the dresses worn by Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales. Since Queen Victoria spent a lot of her time at the palace until her ascending the British throne, one can get a glimpse of her life at the palace. Other interesting features of the palace are the King’s Gallery and the Sunken Gardens.
