Slovenia Airports

Slovenia Airport or Ljubljana airport, also known as Brnik, is situated 26 km’s from the city center. Ljubljana airport is situated some 20 km North of Ljubljana in the direction of Kranj. The international airport code is LJU. Previously known as Brnik Airport, recently it has been renamed to Joze Pucnik Airport, after a contemporary Slovenian statesman. There are cheap flights to Ljubljana from several European cities.

Most flights to Slovenia from the UK operate to Brnik airport (Slovenia Airport), which sits in a fairly central location just to the north of the capital Ljubljana. A very limited range of charter flights to Maribor operates during the ski season. There are also several cities in neighboring countries which are very close to Slovenia’s borders – Trieste airport is to the south-west in Italy; the Croatian capital Zagreb is to the east, and the Austrian airports of Graz and Klagenfurt are both just to the north.

Slovenia has good air connections with many European cities. The majority of flights arrive at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, from where you can catch daily flights to cities all over Europe. The airport is also served by two low-cost airlines. Some international flights use the airports in Maribor and Portorož.

The Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport (airport code: MBX) is one of the largest in the country but has extremely limited service. There are no international flights to Maribor, and it handles mainly seasonal and charter traffic so for a flight to Maribor from South Africa, you will have to arrive at the Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (code: LJU) near the capital. You can get a train to Maribor from there. One-stop flights to Ljubljana are offered by Turkish Airlines and Swiss Air, with connections in Istanbul and Zurich, respectively.

Portoroz airport or Slovenia Airport is the only airport in southwestern Slovenia.Portoroz Airport is also an ideal place to visit Istrian Peninsula and Adriatic Coast in Croatia. Being very small there is no car rental office at the airport whatsoever. Portorož airport is open every day from 8.30 to 20.00 Summertime, and in winter time from 08.00 to 16.00. It is a small international airport (runway 1200 m, asphalt, lighted) and it has: Duty-free and Travels value shop, car rental, restaurant, taxi service, hotel and restaurant reservation, air taxi, panorama flights, pilot school. Car rentals are provided free of charge, however, all rentals have to be reserved in advance.
