Slovenia Portoroz

Portoroz, (the word mean Port of Roses), is situated in one of the most beautiful bays on Slovenia’s Adriatic coastline. The town is Slovenia’s biggest tourist center. Slovenia only has 42km of coastline and Portoroz has the largest beaches on the coast. It’s a large, built up resort with hotels (Portoroz hotels), restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops as well as being a good location to base yourself for some visits into Slovenia and some of Croatia.

Sea, wind, salt, Mediterranean aromas, palm trees, roses and evergreens, relaxation, fun, and friendliness are the words that best describe Portorož, a coastal town at the heart of Europe. The interplay of different cultures and music, natural setting, gastronomic delights, and chequered history make for an atmosphere that makes us put our daily worries aside and just relax. Leisurely strolls by the sea, refreshing jogging on the Portoroz Slovenia beach, swimming in pools and the sea, beauty and health care programmes at thermal spas, sports, and recreation revitalize the body and soul. Portorož is closely connected to nearby Piran, a small medieval town whose fame and fortune come from one of the largest saltpans in this part of the world.

Salt Pan Museum in Portoroz

In the peaceful region of surrounding country, only a few kilometers from Portoroz lies Secovlje saltpans. Abandoned saltpans are today a peaceful place for birds, visitors, and few workers. The saltpans were abandoned in the 1960’s and declared a landscape park in 1989. The saltpans cover the area of 650 ha. They give shelter to many bird species and plants. In the spirit of preserving tradition, the saltpan museum uses the 600-year-old salt- making technique for the production of salt.

Today Portorož is a popular place either for work or vacation and entertainment. Many comfortable hotels are witness to that, with their modern pools, a varied culinary proposal of restaurants, and the events attracting visitors from afar. Portorož is also a popular congress location. A visit to the nearby countryside can color your day. The coastal towns of Piran, Izola, and Koper are intertwined with narrow streets, leading to picturesque squares, encircled with mighty palaces. From the villages in the hinterland, magnificent views of Istria open up, during spells of nice weather the even Alps can be admired. Close by Karst offers different possibilities: visit subterranean caves or to stud farm Lipica, home of famous Lipizzaner horses, the horses of the former Austrian Imperial Court.

It is very easily accessible (Trieste airport is only 80km away and Ljubljana is under an hour and a half away) and there are lots of places within easy reach that are well worth a visit – The capital city of Ljubljana is charming, the caves of Postonja and Skocjan are stunning and Predjama Castle which is over 700 years old is built in front of a large cave and perched on a cliff. The other Slovenian coastal towns (Piran and Koper) are also worth a visit. Venice is a little over 2 hours away by road, but can also be visited by boat.
