Downing Street Residence of Prime Minister

Downing Street in Whitehall area of London holds importance as it has been official residence of Prime Minister of United Kingdom and Chancellor of Exchequer.

Downing Street was built in the late 1600's by Sir George Downing. At that time, the Street was built on a land which was part of a mansion known as Hampden House. 10 Downing Street is where the official residence of the United Kingdom's Prime Minister is situated. It is close to Buckingham Palace which is the official London residence of the British monarch. 11 Downing Street is the official residence of the Chancellor of Exchequer.

The Downing Street area is entirely under surveillance and security. The place is not open to the public. The security of the area was intensified after the 1991 bomb attack. In 1985, 10 Downing Street, also known as 'Number 10' completed 250 years. William Pitt, the younger has been the longest living resident of 10 Downing Street. He is known to have lived here for nearly 21 years until his death in 1806.
