Milton Keynes is located in Buckinghamshire about 45 mins by train from London Euston. It is a very unique town in the whole of England. Unlike other cities in England, it has a very modern look to it. There are no very old buildings since the town is a planned one.
Things to do in Milton Keynes
The church used to be the tallest building in town but I think there are new buildings that have been allowed to be taller. Another unusual thing about the city is the road names – Silbury Boulevard, Midsummer Boulevard is hardly in any other English town.
Traveling from London Euston to Milton Keynes
The fastest way to reach Milton Keynes is by train. There are frequent trains from London Euston station which will take you to Milton Keynes Central station in about 45 mins.
It’s on the London to Birmingham route. Alternately you can take a national express coach as well from London, however, that will take much longer.

Unique Road Grid
It has a unique grid-like road structure. If you have been to the US, you know what I mean.
Shopping Center
Plenty of shopping options. All are centered in the city center, so very convenient. There is Xscape which has cinema and other activities for children like rope climbing and other toys.
Ikea in Milton Keynes
Travel to Oxford and Cambridge
X5 is the best bus service you can use to visit both these wonderful places. Both are hardly a couple of hours away with Milton Keynes in the middle.
Milton Keynes Council
Council offices are located in the city center. One of the offices is next to the Library (opposite Marks & Spencer). They deal with most of the council-related work – e.g. paying your council tax etc. There are some offices on Avebury Boulevard (near Debenhams, opposite Argos office)
Milton Keynes Hospital
The hospital is also called Milton Keynes general hospital. There are a couple of good things about medical services in Milton Keynes.
1. A few years back they started a walk-in center which is open till 10 pm and is staffed by nurses. So if you have minor illnesses, bruises needing a bandage etc. it can be a quick place. Its located in the hospital campus.
2.MK-DOCS (Milton Keynes Doctors On Call) is a service that also operates in the hospital campus.
It’s open when your GP surgery is closed (evenings and weekends). So if you have a medical emergency, you can go there with an appointment (Your surgery will typically divert calls to MKDOCs helpdesk outside working hours). Firstly a nurse will assess you over the phone and will ask you to go to MK DOCS if necessary.
I have used this service for myself and for kids and have found it to be extremely useful. Thanks, NHS.
MK Library
Milton Keynes library is situated near the shopping center opposite Marks & Spencer. Its typically open from 9 to 6 on Mon, Tues, Wed, from 9 to 8 pm on Thu, Fri and from 9 to 5 on Saturdays.
It has a separate section for kids books. You can also reserve books from the libraries connected to MK library (e.g. Bletchley)
The Bowl
The open air National Bowl is a 65,000 “seat” venue for large-scale rock (and classical) concerts. It is situated off the A5 near Furzton.
Bowl is also the location of ‘Car Boot Sales’ in Milton Keynes on Sunday mornings. Recently there are also Car Boot Sales on Wednesday mornings.
The sale does attract a large number of people in Summer when people go there to have a stroll and have a coffee. You can get some bargains as well.
Best thing is to start your walk from behind the Railway Station. There is a small bridge next to La Hind restaurant (outside train station). Cross the bridge and follow signs to the Bowl.
Cineworld
There are two places where you can watch a cinema in Milton Keynes. You can go to Cineworld located in Xcape – which is the dome-shaped big building that you can not miss near the shopping center. Or you can go behind the Midsummer place (glass building with open architecture) located in the shopping center.
There is an Odeon as well in the city center.
Xscape in Milton Keynes
Some people also call is ‘escape’. Xscape buildings (named after the company that developed them) are large, strikingly designed and unusually shaped buildings. Typically they contain a real snow indoor ski slope, leisure facilities, and related shops. There are currently three members of the chain, located in Central Milton Keynes and Castleford (Wakefield), which are both in England, and in Braehead (Glasgow), Scotland.
The Milton Keynes Xscape opened in 2000, answering the city’s demand for a largely visible landmark from which the city center can be found. From behind it resembles a snow-covered hill, and can be seen from the small town of Olney, over eight miles away.
The Xscape has 14 floors, making it the second tallest building in Milton Keynes after Mellish Court in Bletchley. Inside the Xscape can be found a real-snow ski slope, a 16 screen cinema, a number of shops and a climbing wall. An interesting point is the two large funnels on the front of the building – often mistaken for lifts and part of the cooling system are actually just stairs.
Located directly behind the Xscape building is a large square-shaped structure which houses an indoor skydiving center named ‘Airkix’. This too can be seen from as far away as Broughton.
